old money fragrances- cover

If you know me, then you know that the older I get, the more I gravitate to classic and timeless perfumes, which means it’s finally time for me to do an entire article about what I consider “old money fragrances“.

Cherished across generations, these fragrances embody a sense of heritage and understated luxury.

While most of us(me included) aren’t born into a wealthy family such as the British royal family, we can at least smell like something they would wear, or in my opinion, even better.

So, here is a fun little article about serious perfumes for us enthusiasts who wish to smell like royalty.

HOW WOULD I DEFINE “OLD MONEY FRAGRANCES”

old money fragrances - castle hallway

A fragrance representing “old money” reflects timeless elegance and sophistication, typically linked to inherited wealth and subtle luxury.

Let’s not mistake the fact that “old money” doesn’t necessarily have to mean something expensive, but rather something that would be more strict, refined, and easily worn 100 years in past as it would be 100 years from now.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF OLD MONEY FRAGRANCES

  1. Classic compositions that can include notes such as rose, jasmine, oakmoss, citruses, sandalwood, amber and patchouli.
  2. These fragrances usually steer clear of strong or fashionable elements, choosing instead a sophisticated and understated scent that creates a memorable impact without dominating the senses.
  3. Most of these perfumes are often produced by renowned heritage brands with a history of crafting prestige, enduring scents.
  4. They are produced using premium ingredients, a hallmark of “old money” fragrances.
  5. Most of them have been on the market for a long and carry an air of exclusivity and sophistication.

Essentially, they represent a lifestyle that values tradition, quality, and living a good life without showing it to anyone else.

10. Guerlain Heritage Eau de Toilette

A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “Inspired by yesterday’s generations, Héritage is a fragrance dedicated to the men of tomorrow.

It opens with aromatic freshness, succeeded by the subtlety of a warm spicy accord on a woody dry-down with shades of the orient.”

WHY DO I CONSIDER GUERLAIN HERITAGE EAU DE TOILETTE ONE OF THE OLD MONEY FRAGRANCES: Heritage epitomizes the “old money” fragrance archetype through its masterful blend of classic notes, which I could wear for upscale events.

Launched in 1992 by renowned perfumer Jean-Paul Guerlain, this woody oriental fragrance showcases prominent notes of patchouli, sandalwood, and amber, creating an atmosphere of sophisticated elegance.

This sophisticated progression mirrors the understated luxury and enduring appeal associated with generational affluence.

This is by far the best “starter” fragrance in this genre which smells like someone from a heritage and wealthy family.

9. Guerlain Habit Rouge Eau de Toilette

A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “Habit Rouge Eau de Toilette is a classic of elegance, glorified by the freshness of citrus notes. Created in 1965, Habit Rouge was the first ambery fragrance for men in perfumery.

From the moment of its launch, this tribute to Guerlain’s passion for the dressage of horses created an element of surprise with its scents of sensual and bold vanilla. With its modern geometry and mastery of form, Habit Rouge has an eternally elegant French appeal.

Habit Rouge embraces a dandy man who dares everything, combining sophistication and refinement. He lives his life fervently and distinguishes himself with a trail of extreme sensuality.”

WHY DO I CONSIDER GUERLAIN HABIT ROUGE EAU DE TOILETTE ONE OF THE OLD MONEY FRAGRANCES: I could have presented different variations of Habit Rouge. Nonetheless, I can confidently state that there isn’t a fragrance superior to the iconic Eau de Toilette within Guerlain’s collection.

Created by the master perfumer Jean-Paul Guerlain in 1965 as a tribute to the sophistication of horse dressage, Habit Rouge represents a “dandy man” who fully embraces life.

In today’s world, Habit Rouge symbolizes all we hold dear about French perfumery and continues selling remarkably well.

Does its fragrance seem somewhat nostalgic in the 2020s? Indeed, it does. However, should you disregard it for that reason?

Nah. Not experiencing Habit Rouge is akin to skipping out on the fundamentals of perfumery; you’ll likely prefer Habit Rouge over many current mainstream offerings.

8. Acqua di Parma Colonia

A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “Created in 1916, Colonia is an attitude that expresses the essence of a lifestyle – dynamic, modern and effortlessly original. As soon as Acqua di Parma’s instantly recognisable golden fruits blend of radiant lemon, Calabrian bergamot, and orange start to spill their luminous notes into the air, the perfume’s sparkling character comes alive.

It is amplified even more in the aromatic heart of the fragrance where lavender and hints of rose harmoniously intertwine with rosemary. Warm and precious woody notes of vetiver, sandalwood, and patchouli round off the base of this iconic Eau de Cologne.”

WHY DO I CONSIDER ACQUA DI PARMA COLONIA ONE OF THE OLD MONEY FRAGRANCES: Colonia presents a relatively simple and less complex fragrance than we typically encounter today, yet it is executed flawlessly, and I wouldn’t alter any aspect of it.

The initial notes provide a bright and airy, refreshing wave of citrus. The combination of lemon, orange, and bergamot generates a crisp, clean, and revitalizing feeling reminiscent of a cool breeze from the Mediterranean.

In the heart of its middle phase, you will discover a captivating mix of lavender, rosemary, and damask rose.

The scent’s base delivers its most lasting and resonant qualities – a signature timelessness coupled with a subtle yet significant depth that remains on the skin.

Traces of the keynotes and accords from both the top and mid, mingled with white musk, evoke the sensation of freshly laundered sheets.

An incredible composition is available for under 100.00 USD, making it a quintessential fragrance for gentlemen.

7. Creed Green Irish Tweed

A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “Inspired by Olivier Creed’s family couture legacy, Green Irish Tweed Eau de Parfum is a true fougère fragrance that is both aromatic and fresh. Evoking the lush green countryside of the Emerald Isle, freshly cut grass and a fresh sea breeze, this classic men’s fragrance is a clean and natural smelling scent, characterized by its dry, grassy, hay-like dry down.

Refreshing head notes of lemon and verbena are perfectly cooled with a breath of invigorating peppermint. Layers of fresh, green geranium are pitched against fresh and aromatic lavender, while rich notes of cedarwood, sandalwood, oakmoss and ambroxan mingle together to leave a unique, long-lasting arboreal scent for him – a refreshing twist on a classic gentleman’s fragrance.”

WHY DO I CONSIDER CREED GREEN IRISH TWEED ONE OF THE OLD MONEY FRAGRANCES: The obvious choice loved by many, both enthusiasts and famous people around the world, and my personal favorite fragrance from Creed.

The distinctive lemon verbena effect and fresh ozonic violet are prominent in the top notes. Ambergris is consistently detectable, while a subtle aquatic undertone quickly fades as the heart notes emerge.

As the heart develops, the initial brightness softens, revealing aromatic lavender and powdery iris, creating a complex olfactory journey.

In the base, oakmoss provides a modern twist on the ’70s and ’80s fragrances, concluding the experience with deep and comforting notes in a familiar classic style.

You can’t go wrong with Green Irish Tweed in this case since it will still be worn 50 years from now.

6. Penhaligon’s Sartorial

A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “Step into the workroom of Norton & Sons, bespoke tailors of Savile Row, and breathe in. Steam, beeswax, leather and lavender. Vanilla-sweet notes of tonka bean. A dapper scent for dapper gents.”

WHY DO I CONSIDER PENHALIGON’S SARTORIAL ONE OF THE OLD MONEY FRAGRANCES: Having worn Penhaligon’s Sartorial for many years through samples, I have developed an appreciation for its unique composition that reflects the spirit of a custom tailor’s workshop.

The scent begins with a striking metallic note, akin to freshly ironed fabric, which gradually evolves into a balanced mixture of lavender, beeswax, and leather, capturing the essence of a Savile Row atelier.

This intricate yet polished fragrance has consistently paired well with my formal outfits, enhancing the sophistication of my overall presence.

Truth be told, it’s not even that expensive if you purchase it via the official website, so there is no real excuse not to check out this masterpiece from the heritage niche house of Penhaligon’s.

5. Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum 2017

A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “François Demachy revisits the trail of Eau Sauvage in its Parfum interpretation with a refreshed aromatic power. As powerful and sensual as ever, the composition is invigorated with a unique freshness warmed by the Grasse sun.

Top notes bursting with citrus revive a woody heart of pure vetiver. This light wood stirs the warm and powerful elemi note to unfurl in a spicy, oriental base.

Deep and full, vibrant and fresh, the new Eau Sauvage Parfum enhances the solar signature of Eau Sauvage with warm and radiant accents.”

WHY DO I CONSIDER DIOR EAU SAUVAGE PARFUM 2017 ONE OF THE OLD MONEY FRAGRANCES: Dior always knew how to make perfumes that transcend current trends, and Eau Sauvage Parfum is no different.

In my opinion, the 2017 version is much more wearable than the vintage 2012, and if you aren’t a hardcore collector, I would skip altogether on purchasing the vintage for more than 200-300 USD it goes these days.

As someone who owned both versions, I would spend the other 200,00 USD on something else.

So, why is this Parfum special? The fragrance opens with a vibrant burst of citrus, particularly lemon, seamlessly transitioning into a heart enriched with lavender and elemi. This heart offers a harmonious blend of freshness and subtle spiciness.

As it settles, the scent reveals a robust base of vetiver, providing an earthy depth that exudes sophistication.

Although not my favorite “Parfum” from Dior, it is probably the only one that gives those “old money” vibes. Recommended.

4. Clive Christian L

A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “The sense of pure intimate luxury. A Clive Christian perfume is a work of perfection, crafted especially for the wearer as a form of self-expression.

This esteemed floral chypre captures the natural elegance of jasmine and rose, a twist of dry orris and peppery frankincense wrapped in sensual honey, vanilla and musks with a hint of bold leather.”

WHY DO I CONSIDER CLIVE CHRISTIAN L ONE OF THE OLD MONEY FRAGRANCES: Clive Christian L seamlessly merges classic perfume techniques with modern influences, combining the brightness of citrus, aromatic herbs, and the elegance of woods and musks to craft an extraordinary fragrance.

Although it features notes of rose and oud, it notably avoids the cliché and uncreative. Meticulously created, this scent radiates quality, offering a subtle longevity without overpowering.

Its distinctly sharp, timeless appeal makes it one of those fragrances that, in accordance with earlier observations, deserves a place on the shelf.

L is one of the rare fragrances for which I would consider recommending even blind buying at a discount. It’s this good, and it requires a wearer to wear something more upscale.

3. Nicolai Parfumeur Createur New York Intense

A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: ““Patricia de Nicolaï conveys her fascination with ‘the city that never sleeps’ with her intoxicating oriental signature: after a start of citrus bursts, pepper and clove spice up the patchouli bordered with vanilla, incense and balm. It haunts the San-Antonio crime novels, whose author, Frédéric Dard, was one of the first aficionados.”

WHY DO I CONSIDER NICOLAI PARFUMEUR CREATEUR NEW YORK INTENSE ONE OF THE OLD MONEY FRAGRANCES: Let me just say that I think New York Intense is kind of an overrated fragrance, which I claimed in the past and still believe.

Nonetheless, I know this is a woody aromatic fragrance from yesteryear with slightly higher quality ingredients than fragrances from that period.

The fragrance opens with vibrant notes of bergamot, lemon, and petitgrain, leading into a heart enriched with black pepper, cloves, and cinnamon, and settles into a base of oakmoss, tonka bean, and incense, creating a complex and refined aroma.

Old money vibes, but only for those who appreciate these kinds of scents. I can’t be biased and ignore this composition because I don’t like it so much, and it’s well worth checking out for those who love mossy fragrances.

2. Chanel Egoiste

A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “The olfactory portrait of a strong-minded, fascinating and elusive man. A unique, bold woody-spicy-amber composition in a masculine bottle with clean, sharp lines.

A unique woody-spicy-amber composition with a strong personality. The vigorous, fresh top notes of Mandarin and Coriander, subtly spiced, blend into the warm and enveloping notes of Turkish Rose. New Caledonian Sandalwood is teamed with Vanilla from Madagascar and Ambrette Seed to give it a sensual, ambery trail.”

WHY DO I CONSIDER CHANEL EGOISTE ONE OF THE OLD MONEY FRAGRANCES: I had an older bottle of Egoiste a long time ago, and I remember how it made me feel each time I wore it.

Like a million bucks, and about 10 years ago, maybe a little too young to pull it off easily. But now that I’m a little older and wiser, I would gladly own it again.

The fragrance begins with a superb mix of Brazilian rosewood and coriander, creating a warm and gently spicy opening.

As it evolves, the heart showcases a delicate blend of Damask rose and carnation, introducing a delicate floral charm.

The scent culminates in a foundation of sandalwood and vanilla, offering a smooth and lasting finish that radiates classic sophistication.

Last but not least, I still believe that Egoiste is one of, if not the best, sandalwood-based fragrances.

1. Chanel Antaeus

A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “The myth of a hero, both virile and vulnerable, told in an intense and subtle leather-aromatic fragrance. A singular fragrance housed in a rounded square black bottle. A symbol of powerful and sensitive masculinity.

A powerful yet subtle leather-aromatic fragrance. The striking alchemy of fresh, aromatic lavender and a rare and complex leather accord, heightened with wood and spices. Its spirited, exotic trail is enriched with notes of Cistus Labdanum, Clary Sage and Indonesian Patchouli.”

WHY DO I CONSIDER CHANEL ANTAEUS ONE OF THE OLD MONEY FRAGRANCES: Antaeus is my favorite Chanel fragrance of all time, and I still regret not having this website in 2016 when I had a vintage bottle of this perfume to review.

And, if I had to choose just one scent from this list for a sample purchase first, Antaues would be the number one.

As someone who dislikes rose-based fragrances with passion, I’m surprised at how much I like this composition, and it just shows that you can’t go wrong with Chanel in most cases.

At its core, castoreum, rose, and oakmoss dominate the composition.

While it might feel outdated in the first couple of minutes, it quickly turns into the classiest and most prestigious fragrance you could think of.
