Lalique L'Insoumis - cover

L’Insoumis by Lalique is a woody aromatic fragrance for men created by Fabrice Pellegrin and was launched in 2016.

Unsurprisingly, Lalique is the best affordable perfume brand on the planet, especially if you purchase their perfumes at fragrance discounters.

There is no competition here, and rarely can anyone, designer or niche, produce such high-quality and artistic bottles as they do.

PERFUME PRESENTATION

Lalique L'Insoumis - bottle and cap

Wow, wow, and another wow. Yes, I know that the retail price of this offering is well above $100.00, but realistically, who is buying these perfumes retail?

Let’s get one thing straight. No, this is not a copy of Salvatore Ferragamo’s fragrance line design, since Lalique designs, produces and distributes Ferragamo perfumes.

The presentation is a nod to the brand’s storied tradition in crystal craftsmanship. The overall bottle design is sleek, with minimalist yet refined details that capture the essence of modern art.

The cap is made of rubberized metal, and the brand’s famous swallow insignia can be found at the top. The sprayer is excellent, so you don’t have to overspray this composition.

The box reverses the color scheme with blacks and grey and the artistic design on the sides. It is alright, and serves the purpose. Good, but not great.

NOTE BREAKDOWN

Lalique L'Insoumis note breakdown 2

In this section of my Scent Grail review, I’ll dive into the note breakdown that plays a crucial role in shaping the identity of a fragrance.

Understanding how the top, heart, and base notes interact can provide valuable insight into the overall character of the scent.

Whether you’re considering adding a fragrance to your collection or are simply curious about how the notes unfold, this breakdown will help you appreciate the craftsmanship and positive and negative sides of a particular fragrance.

PERFUME NOTES

  • TOP NOTES: Basil, Bergamot, Rum
  • HEART NOTES: Lavender, Clary Sage, Black Pepper
  • BASE NOTES: Haiti Vetiver, Patchouli, Clearwood, Moss

TOP NOTES

For me, the opening is made around all the mentioned top notes, along with the reminder that Dior Sauvage is hanging somewhere in the background.

Don’t get discouraged since the ambroxan is nowhere near as potent as in Dior’s much more popular fragrance. It is here from the start until the finish, but much more understated

Of the three, the slightly sweet coconutty and lactonic rum gives the opening a certain warmth with zesty bergamot and an herbal tinge of basil. Those who love to cook with this herb will immediately notice it.

This could have been a disaster if Pelegrin hadn’t known what he was doing.

HEART NOTES

The transition is remarkably smooth, with aromatic lavender and clary sage emerging as the focal point. I don’t know why, but sage reminded me of the one found in Kouros Silver.

Along with the aromatics, the classic aroma intensifies with the peppery structure underneath.

All of this exudes a refined balance of softness and spice, and the part where I get reminded of the classic aftershave cream.

In my experience, this layer of the fragrance perfectly encapsulates the modern fougère spirit—classic yet imbued with a contemporary twist.

BASE NOTES

Thank God the base is not just the vetiver(Iso E Super version), the same one used in the Encre Noire line. There would be no chance of me saying this is a masterpiece if it were.

Let’s be honest; in most cases, Clearwood is a fancier name for ambroxan. I don’t mind, and I also don’t care that the patchouli and oakmoss are cleaned-up editions of the old-school notes made so that the average wearer can wear something from the past while not noticing 100% what they are smelling.

Nonetheless, I was pleasantly surprised by the complexity that unfolds during this final stage. This combination creates a grounded, sophisticated finish, and softer moss adds an organic, forest-like quality, and patchouli imparts a mysterious and comforting richness.

There are not too many relatively recent affordable releases for which I could say they are this good and get my Holy Grail Scent approval.

PERFORMANCE & APPEAL

Lasting respectably 6 – 8 hours with strong projection for the first hour, which especially suits those with a taste for aromatic fougères with a unique twist.

This fragrance best suits men over 25 who know how to dress well.

No, it doesn’t mean you cannot wear it on something more casual, but you’ll get what I mean when you get your nose on it. Yes, fragrances don’t have a gender, but let’s be real in this case.

I received a couple of compliments for its distinctive yet approachable character when I wore it. Other times, it was a dead silence, and I’m not one of those who beg for the opinion of the fragrance I’m wearing.

OCCASIONS & VALUE

For me, this one is a fragrance that adapts seamlessly to different occasions. I love wearing it during cooler months, and can’t wait to wear it even more in the upcoming warmer weather.

It works best during the day in a professional environment where all its best aspects shine.

Uniqueness is one of the stronger points of this release. While I can’t give it five points in this regard due to the familiar shaving cream aroma, I appreciate that it doesn’t follow trends; instead, it creates its path with an unconventional yet balanced blend of notes.

Lastly, this masterful composition is available for around $25.00 for 100ml from fragrance discounters and is the perfect buy.

COLLECTION & SIMILAR PERFUMES

For a fragrance line that started in 2016, I’m surprised that this brand doesn’t rush with yearly flankers. Only one other scent came out in 2018; we are still awaiting another release.

FINAL WORDS

Lalique L'Insoumis - bottle and box

This was not the first time I have been positively shocked by affordable fragrances that punch well above their price point this year.

Lalique is not a cheap brand, which we have seen many times throughout the years, but its fragrances are usually heavily discounted on the gray market.

What can I say besides that with an open mind, you are definitely in for a treat and a signature-worthy fragrance you might cherish for your entire life.

Your link takes you to Amazon in the not available any longer. Do you recommend a perfume or the toilette water?

    1. Hi Rick. Thanks for the comment. L’Insoumis is unavailable on Amazon, so I linked Notino instead. If you are from the USA/Canada, you can purchase it from FragranceBuy. It is probably the only discounter that carries it there at this moment. The fragrance only comes as an Eau de Toilette, but the performance is good, at least for me. If you decide to purchase it, let me know your thoughts. Best, Marin 🙂
