Nishane Safran Colognise - bottle on a bench

Safran Colognise by Nishane is an unisex citrus leather fragrance created by Jorge Lee and was released in 2019.

Over the many years as a fragrance enthusiast and reviewer, I’ve encountered countless interpretations of traditional cologne formats, mainly following the same formula.

However, few have captured my attention and imagination, quite like this flanker of the original Colognise.

It’s amusing and tragic to note this composition’s scarcity of online written reviews.

Safran Colognise is a rare gem that stands out from the brand’s more popular fragrances, and it’s a privilege to share my insights about it with you.

So, if you have ever wondered whether it’s possible to wear “cologne-type” fragrances throughout the year and if leather and saffron work in this scenario, this is a review for you.

NISHANE SAFRAN COLOGNISE DETAILS AND INSPIRATION

Nishane Safran Colognise - bottle and cap

Regrettably, there is a shortage of information about the intricate creation processes that led to the development of this composition. This only adds to the mystery and allure of this flanker.

Jorge Lee has created many other Nishane fragrances, such as Hacivat and Ambra Calabria.

What he did here was reimagine the very essence of the Turkish cologne (kolonya) tradition.

I placed this house in my favorite niche brands section for the longest time, but that statement might not be valid anymore.

Especially when we see that when they try to do something original other than borderline expensive clone perfumes, the promotion is at zero level.

This release is still in production and available as a 100ml Extrait de Parfum for $165.00.

PERFUME ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “After the global success of Colognisé, NISHANE has decided to extend the “Extrait de Cologne Collection” with the new offerings that will still remind the original Colognisé but will have a different take on some accords for different tastes. Main note of saffron helps to add a mysterious and rich allure to the scent.”

PERFUME PRESENTATION

The only weak point of this release is its presentation. Why would you release three different releases in the same bottle and not give them different names?

It’s just confusing to the customers, and to be honest, lazy. Unfortunately, that’s the first thing I think about this quite pricey brand.

The bottle itself is a study of modern minimalism with subtle traditional influences. It feels satisfyingly premium in hand, created from heavyweight glass with substantial walls.

I love the addition of a wooden cap, but this sticker is glued poorly.

As for the box, I do not have it since I purchased it bottled without it, but I have seen it in real life, and it’s nothing special. A step down from their more expensive offerings.

Overall, the presentation does its work, but it should have been better since many more affordable designer brands do the presentation better on another level.

NOTE BREAKDOWN

Nishane Safran Colognise Note Breakdown

In this section of my Scent Grail review, I’ll dive into the note breakdown that plays a crucial role in shaping the identity of a fragrance.

Understanding how the top, heart, and base notes interact can provide valuable insight into the overall character of the scent.

Whether you’re considering adding a fragrance to your collection or simply curious about how the notes unfold, this breakdown will help you appreciate the craftsmanship and positive and negative sides of a particular fragrance.

PERFUME PYRAMID

  • TOP NOTES: Cedrat, Passion Fruit, Pink Grapefruit
  • HEART NOTES: Saffron, Magnolia, Pink Pepper
  • BASE NOTES: Musk, Ambergris, Leather

TOP NOTES

The opening is nothing short of remarkable. A bold and immediately captivating combination of tangy cedrat and grapefruit and an exotic touch of passion fruit is entirely different from what we usually see in a cologne-type fragrance.

What impresses me about the top notes is their pristine quality and natural feel, and it restores my faith in perfumery that only some things have gone down the drain when considering originality in a broad spectrum.

You will like this, especially if you are a niche lover and want to wear something different from the general perfume consumers.

This complex interplay of citrus and fruity notes creates a traditionally refreshing and uniquely modern opening.

HEART NOTES

The middle stage is even better. This is when saffron and pepper add depth to its already fantastic opening. I have not detected any floral aspects in these three years of owning this fragrance.

The saffron note here is masterfully rendered, presenting multiple facets of this precious spice. This is likely the best saffron interpretation in perfumery. Just magnificent.

Initially, it appears warm and comfy, perfectly complements the fading citrus notes. More complex aspects emerge as it develops – a strong leather touch and a gentle earthiness that adds tremendous depth to the composition.

BASE NOTES

The evolution into the base notes reveals the complete sophistication of the composition.

As if it wasn’t good enough already with everything going on, we are introduced to marine, salty, and musky aspects in the dry down.

The ambergris and musk foundation provides a warm, skin-like quality that transforms the fragrance from a citrusy and leathery cologne into something more intimate and lasting.

What impresses me most about the base notes is their ability to maintain the fragrance’s essential character while adding depth and longevity.

The evolution of these base notes continues over several hours, revealing different aspects of the composition as it develops.

I can’t believe how they managed to create something unique and exciting from a standard cologne fragrance, considering it comes from this house.

In the last three years since owning Colognise, rarely anything has impressed me so much as this one, and quite a few scents went through my hands.

PERFORMANCE & APPEAL

Safran Colognise has excellent longevity and projection. Finally, a real Extrait de Parfum that works as it should.

It typically lasts over 24 hours on the skin with solid projection and sillage for over 6 hours.

This fragrance appeals to those who enjoy unique, unisex compositions that combine freshness with spicy and leathery aspects.

Men and women can pull this one off easily. However, I wonder whether this one is for younger demographics.

In terms of compliments, it receives positive attention for its fresh and sophisticated aroma.

I’ve received exceptionally positive feedback in professional and nightlife settings, where the fragrance’s balance of fresh, slightly playful, and sophisticated elements hits precisely the right note.

OCCASIONS & VALUE

The fragrance’s occasions and versatility shine through, making it especially suitable for warm and cold weather and daily and nightwear.

Regarding its uniqueness, you can’t get better than this in niche perfumery.

While the opening can feel familiar due to its fresh citrus and fruits, the fragrance takes on a unique depth with the saffron/leather and almost animalic marine elements, differentiating it from typical citrus colognes.

Lastly, the value of money is out of this world. Usually, you can still get the 100ml for under 100 dollars; for that price, it is the best fragrance in its category.

Nothing even comes close to it: designer or niche.

FINAL WORDS

Nishane Safran Colognise - bottle and leaves

This creation successfully bridges the gap between traditional Turkish cologne-making and contemporary niche fragrance composition, offering something unique in today’s market saturated with dull and overpriced perfumes.

It took my time with this review, wearing it for three full years throughout all four seasons and on multiple occasions, to give my final rating.

And that is a hidden gem masterpiece that only some people talk about, and currently, the best Nishane offers.

It is also a safe blind buy for a discounted price if you have been into a niche side of perfumery for some time. Magnificient!
