Lalique Encre Noire Sport Review (2013): The One You Should Start With

Encre Noire Sport by Lalique is a woody aromatic fragrance for men, created by Nathalie Lorson and was launched in 2013.

I might not be the only person who, on seeing the word “Sport” on a bottle of perfume, immediately thinks of the typical suspects—synthetic blue aquatics, a sharp shower-gel kind of freshness, and an excessive amount of laundry musk intended for general market appeal.

It’s rather surprising to come across this label on an Encre Noire flanker, even though I had deliberately avoided it for a long time, and this has now become the final one from that range that I’ve tried. In fact, I had tried the Encre Indigo before I tried this one.

With all this gathered knowledge, I have to say that if I could go back in time, Sport would be the one I would have tried first, and in this review you’ll see why.

LALIQUE ENCRE NOIRE SPORT ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “Elegant and dynamic, this iconic male fragrance by Lalique represents a new chapter for Encre Noire. This version is inspired by the sportier side of the luxurious Maison. A wave of freshness surges between the shadowy lines of its distinctive woody character.

The fragrance’s top notes include grapefruit and bergamot, boosted by a refreshing breeze of cypress and lavender. At its heart, the coolness of aquatic notes enhanced by nutmeg emphasises the Bourbon and Haitian Vetyver. At its base, musk and cashmere wood leave their mark on Encre Noire Sport.”

PERFUME PRESENTATION

The bottle is made from dense glass. Unlike the completely opaque, dark bottle of the original, holding this glass up to light reveals the liquid moving inside.

It gives the object a subtle, ghostly translucency resembling smoke suspended in clear ice. The typography is clean and understated: “ENCRE NOIRE” is printed in stark silver-grey, while “SPORT” stands out in vibrant crimson red.

The cap is an extraordinary design detail, especially since this fragrance sells at mass-market discount prices. Made of solid ash wood with a light grey natural grain finish, it provides a pleasant tactile contrast to the cold glass below.

The atomiser is top-notch, dispensing a wide, fine mist that spreads evenly over skin or fabric without pooling or dripping.

TOP NOTES

Before I go on, if you’re reading this in 2026, this is the 20th year since the original Encre Noire was released. Arguably, one of the best fragrance releases of the 21st century.

Also, 2006 marks the unofficial year I started getting into this hobby. Aren’t we getting old?

Last but not least, Encre Noire A L’Extreme is my favourite from the line, even though I agree that only the original is a masterpiece release.

The first couple of minutes deliver a realistic burst of tart, bitter grapefruit skin along with lemony bergamot.

Unlike typical summer releases that utilise sugary, candy-like citrus notes or harsh synthetic lemons, Lorson keeps the fruit accord distinctly dry, natural, and acidic.

As the initial citrus wave settles, the fragrance transitions into its aquatic accord that feels dewy and botanical rather than salty, metallic, or marine.

HEART NOTES

Leave it for ten to twenty minutes, and the cypress and a clean, soft lavender will begin to appear in the middle phase, eliminating any harsh edges from the opening.

One of the advantages of all the Encre scents is that they never have a synthetic or cheap feel, something that many more expensive brands can only wish for, even though they charge you five times as much as Lalique.

The “water note” is present in the middle as well, and from my experience the general impression is one of an atmospheric, spa-like feeling that gives a sense of calm and mental clarity.

More precisely, one could walk through a forest on a cooler day and go past a cold lake.

BASE NOTES

The real magic of any Encre Noire scent is in the dry down, and Nathalie Lorson delivers once again.

The base is a special mix of two types of vetiver: bourbon vetiver, which adds earthy, smoky warmth, and Haitian vetiver, which brings a cleaner, greener, slightly nutty woodiness.

The pronounced dampness of the original is softened by velvety cashmere wood and clean, comforting white musks.

That famous musky smell you detect here and in many other fragrances is coming from the Iso E Super molecule.

Other famous fragrances that use it in excess include Terre d’Hermès and Escentric Molecules Molecule 01.

As it settles into a skin scent over a couple of hours, it remains quite clean and sophisticated, evoking high-end stationery, fine woodwork, and damp soil warmed by the afternoon sun.

Either way, the base is familiar territory across all scents from the line, and those who already own one or two can know what to expect.

PERFORMANCE & APPEAL

On me, it basically performs similarly to its younger Extreme brother, which is around 5 to 7 hours. Good enough for most of the things, and will effortlessly last all day if sprayed on clothing.

The projection is moderate and more suited for professional occasions: it creates an alluring 2-foot aura around you for the first 2 hours before settling into an intimate but highly persistent trail.

For nature lovers, creative professionals, and fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate understated luxury, Sport is a brilliant signature scent for a man who values depth over flashy, attention-seeking fragrance.

That’s why compliments are something you probably shouldn’t expect when wearing it. This isn’t a clubbing scent designed to pull random reactions, and the word “niche” is probably the best description.

It smells mature, intelligent, and highly composed. Those who know, know, and those who don’t will never apreciate the artistry behind this composition.

It is a highly versatile choice that easily moves from Spring through to Summer and Fall.
