A*Men Fantasm by Mugler is a spicy oriental fragrance for men, created by Louise Turner and Jacques Huclier and was launched in 2024.

For thirty years, Thierry Mugler’s range of masculine fragrances had been a dominant force in the field of gourmand perfumery.

But after years of quiet reformulations, corporate transitions, and heartbreaking discontinuations, many of us wondered if the bold, unapologetic soul of A*Men was gone forever, especially with the last one carrying full Mugler’s name, A*Men Pure Tonka.

After weird flankers like Ultimate and Kryptomint, I can safely say Fantasm is the first Mugler flanker worth checking out in over a decade.

As someone who has been Mugler’s fan for the longest time, all I can say is that we are back, baby!

A*Men Fantasm takes the original fragrance’s signature patchouli and coffee accord shifts them to new heights. The balance of these masculine aromatic notes creates an intense and long-lasting ambery gourmand scent. Top notes are Citrus and Bergamot; middle notes are Dark Chocolate and Clary Sage; base note is Patchouli Essence.

With A*Men Fantasm, the iconic Mugler bottle takes on an original incarnation. A smooth, tactile black, adorned with the iconic star now in shining silver. The A*Men Fantasm eau de parfum bottle is offered in 100 ml and 50 ml sizes.”

PERFUME PRESENTATION

The rubber flask-style fragrance bottle is the same as all before. None of the issues has been fixed, but more importantly, all that was good stayed great.

This is one of my favourite perfume bottles in the fragrance game, due to its distinct look and never going into the tacky territory that many modern masculine fragrances suffer from.

Although I have never been a fan of movies or cartoons in the superhero genre, the superhero-flask design launched by Thierry Mugler and designer Jean-Jacques Urcun in 1996 still seems completely suited to today’s aesthetic standards.

Apart from the star, which has a chrome appearance, the sprayer is still the main problem, and you will still have trouble finding the correct position to spray the fragrance.

The packaging matches this minimalist, dark aesthetic: a sturdy matte-black cardboard box accented with clean silver lettering and the star motif with purple side colors.

Overall, it looks better than many new releases, but could use some updates after being on the market for 30 years.

NOTE BREAKDOWN

TOP NOTES

The first spray of Fantasm delivers a burst of bright and energetic surprise. Instead of overwhelming all my senses with dense sugar or heavy tar – vintage A*Men was famous for this – the scent opens with a sharp, sparkling burst of a combination of bergamot and lemon.

During my first ten minutes of wearing it, a subtle warmth from pink pepper emerges beneath the bright citrus, and a note that is not mentioned anywhere: a distinct coconut accord.

This coconut is noticeable throughout the whole life of the fragrance, and it twists it in a way that, in theory, it could be worn during the colder summer nights with careful application.

The opening is quite clever: it basically acts as a luminous, airy veil that keeps the rich gourmand layers underneath from feeling heavy or suffocating.

HEART NOTES

About fifteen to twenty minutes later, the sparkling citrus starts to fade, and the main feature makes its appearance: the Chocolat Noir Grand Cru Accord.

The smell is not that of a thin and synthetic chocolate syrup; on my skin it smells like high-percentage dark cocoa—rich, slightly bitter, powdery, and very decadent.

The reason it doesn’t turn into a simple dessert scent is the deliberate addition of clary sage, which provides an aromatic, herbal note that reduces the sweetness of the cocoa.

There is a striking contrast between the rich, gourmand qualities and the refined masculine structure.

BASE NOTES

As Fantasm settles into its full dry-down after two to three hours, it really connects with classic Mugler heritage.

The brand’s signature Patchouli Essence comes through strongly, blending with the dark chocolate and a velvety touch of tonka bean (which isn’t listed in the official notes).

The patchouli here is very smooth. The harsh, damp “dirty cellar” notes from the 1996 original have been softened into a dark, woody, and creamy texture.

On my skin, the dry-down becomes a warm, sensual, close scent that gives off a sophisticated sweetness for hours.

What will make or break it for most people is the coconut note, which is still there even in the deep dry-down. For me, it’s a breath of fresh air and a step in the right direction for future releases.

If you enjoyed a fragrance such as Nasomatto Pardon, this is probably the safest buy you can make.

PERFORMANCE & APPEAL

I have to say that I’m pleasantly surprised with the performance of the fragrance. During the milder weather, I consistently recorded 10 to 12 hours of noticeable wear on skin.

For at least 2-3 hours, the fragrance projects strongly, creating an arm’s-length bubble around me before settling into a closer scent bubble that takes a long time before becoming a skin scent.

So, who is this fragrance really for? Honestly, I doubt the new wave of fragrance fans will fall for it.

Not because it smells bad, but because it is far more niche than the typical new releases from Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy, or Armani.

I feel like these chocolate-patchouli classics from the 90s and earlier are made for those of us over 30, though I can easily picture a bold 20-year-old choosing this over the usual sugary crowd-pleasers.

The coolest weather I experienced while testing A*Men was in May 2026, and even then, it mostly earned positive reactions.

Friends noted that it smelled “intoxicating,” “rich,” and “like an upscale, dark chocolate dessert paired with a tailored coat.

So, in short: yes, you will get noticed. After all, who can resist the scent of chocolate and coconut desserts?

OCCASSIONS & VALUE

This kind of fragrance works best when it’s cold outside. Chilly autumn air and winter frost let the rich chocolate and warm patchouli shine without getting too sweet.

I recommend saving it for late fall and using it as your secret weapon for evening outings, holiday parties, or relaxed nights out.

With so many aquatics, generic fresh scents, and overly sweet fragrances out there, a dark chocolate scent with spices, citrus, and coconut really stands out.

In terms of value, it offers solid quality. Even though designer prices have gone up everywhere, the deep cacao note and reliable performance make it a good buy for fans of dark gourmand scents.

It really just depends on whether you liked the earlier versions of A*Men, since this one probably won’t change your mind.

And one more important thing: if you are even thinking about getting Fantasm or the latest Stellar, just buy them right now. It is not even a question of whether they will be discontinued; it is just a matter of a few short years at best.
