The hot topic for today is about the most overrated perfumes. Let’s face it: the perfume world is a minefield of marketing hype and influencer endorsements.
While I believe certain fragrances deserve the praise they receive, others don’t live up to the astronomical price tags, average compositions, and relentless advertising.
So, with this article, I will take a deep dive into the world of overrated fragrances and scents that have yet to earn their legendary status despite being praised by many.

Remember, the olfactive world is incredibly biased and personal. What smells divine on me might be a headache-inducing nightmare for you, and vice versa.
This list is based on my experiences and preferences; yours may differ vastly.
In the following paragraphs, I will explain how this list was created and why you should take a second look before purchasing any of these.
A Critical Look at Overrated Perfumes: The List
This list wasn’t born out of spite for any fragrance or brand but rather a desire for genuine exploration within the fragrance world and how things work in the real world.
Each product you will see here is based on my experience with them wearing them on different occasions and in multiple seasons.
Yes, personal preferences played a significant role while creating this article since, after all, we all know that fragrance is subjective, as mentioned in the introductory words of this article.
Beyond personal preference, each fragrance’s reputation and popularity were also a significant factor in why they ended up here.
Furthermore, this list doesn’t claim these fragrances are objectively “bad.” It simply highlights scents that, in my opinion, haven’t earned their legendary status based on the popularity they receive.
The goal isn’t to dissuade anyone from enjoying these perfumes but rather to spark curiosity and encourage readers to discover their unique scent profiles without being influenced by anyone else.
While perfumes from houses such as Xerjoff and Creed have yet to end up here, I believe they have quite a few overrated fragrances in their catalog, but at this point, I have decided to skip placing them here.
10. Maison Martin Margiela By the Fireplace
A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “Maison Margiela’s By the Fireplace evokes cozy winter evenings indoors next to a enveloping fire. The snow gently falls on the frosty white landscape as you are lulled by the gracious dancing flames.
Remember the reassurance of chestnuts grilling in the chimney and a crackling wood fire with Replica By the Fireplace perfume. This warm and cozy Eau de Toilette fuses the smoky scent of burning wood with notes of gaiac wood, cashmeran and clove oil. The scent of roasted chestnuts is recreated by a blend of chestnuts notes nd red berries oil. The sweet notes of vanilla reinforce the warm and cozy sensation brought by this perfume.
Close your eyes, smell this woody fragrance and remember the enveloping sensation of a fireplace in the midst of Winter.”
THE REASON WHY MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA BY THE FIREPLACE IS ONE OF THE MOST OVERRATED PERFUMES: One of the two designer fragrances on the list, and trust me when I say that the whole list could have been made out of designer scents exclusively.
A trendy fragrance that has already become a “cult classic” within the fragrance community that promises a cozy experience.
My only real issue with it is that it doesn’t smell like roasted chestnuts, no matter what people tell you on fragrance forums and YouTube videos.
Also, the smokiness is more akin to burnt wood than a delicate fireplace, and the sweetness leans towards unnatural rather than the realistic warmth of burning logs.
While the mainstream market offers various designer perfumes attempting a smoky vanilla scent, “By the Fireplace” presents a unique and superior interpretation of this fragrance combination in the designer realm.
Other than that, the pricing is reasonable, performance is alright for an Eau de Toilette, and the “Hype Train” it received in the last couple of years means that Martin Margiela gave many free bottles to reviewers.
Good, but not great.

9. Bvlgari Man In Black
A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “With Bvlgari Man in Black, Bvlgari expresses the impetuous and mysterious character of fire, a transformative element that symbolises strength and energy. A magnetic Eau de Parfum that exerts a power of fascination, a daringly charismatic fragrance expressing a new statement of masculinity.”
THE REASON WHY BVLGARI MAN IN BLACK IS ONE OF THE MOST OVERRATED PERFUMES: The primary reason why Man in Black is here is because of the perfume price hike we have experienced in the last couple of years, where before, this was an affordable and perfect winter designer fragrance.
But now, when Bvlgari charges almost the same as Chanel, Dior, and Hermes for the lesser quality ingredients, I cannot recommend this one unless you find it heavily discounted.
And please, let’s not get started about its hype on YouTube like it is the second coming of Creed Aventus, which unfortunately doesn’t quite live up to its dramatic reputation.
It is a spicy, boozy, and leathery/vanillic fragrance that was an all-star back when you could have easily purchased a full 100ml for less than 60 USD.
Now, when the price is well over 100 USD with its lack of natural development, it should have had a captivating evolution over time.
And lastly, let’s not fool ourselves and admit that this has a “niche quality” when it is an overly synthetic fragrance.
It’s alright and far from terrible, but superior options are available at the same price.

8. Mancera Instant Crush
A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “The irresistible trio rose – jasmine – amber strikes again, in a rich mix of sensuality and romance. Instant Crush is a wave of elegance that mixes citrus fruits and sandalwood with irresistible vanilla and surprising ginger. A real “crush”!”
THE REASON WHY MANCERA INSTANT CRUSH IS ONE OF THE MOST OVERRATED PERFUMES: Much like every other fragrance on this list, each one possesses that distinctive aspect that gave me pause when considering blind purchases of perfumes.
Instant Crush, resembling Baccarat Rouge 540, boasts an intense overdose of vanilla, plasticky saffron, and amber. Its longevity is beyond what anyone expects, lingering on the skin for days, and its projection is powerful.
Regrettably, the overwhelming performance of Instant Crush ultimately led me to part ways with it, and it leans much more on the feminine side.
Additionally, its resemblance to other potent scents, such as Swiss Arabian Shaghaf Oud, played a role in my decision.
For those seeking a fragrance akin to the famous Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 but desiring even greater strength and sweetness, Instant Crush awaits.
For anyone else, stay away from this synthetic composition. Not expensive, sugary sweet, and lacks the magic that makes BR540 unforgettable.

7. Nishane Hacivat
A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “Is a tribute to elegance, kindness, competence, and love of art. Inspired by the traditional shadow play character, this eau chypre will help you live in your best dreams by the everlasting sparkles of its joyful structure made of the stimulating notes of pineapple and bergamot backed with the genuine woody notes. Enjoy being loved with this blissful scent that has become an iconic scent for many in such a short period of time!”
THE REASON WHY NISHANE HACIVAT IS ONE OF THE MOST OVERRATED PERFUMES: This is the first of two Nishane fragrances on this list that seems to pop up more and more in a negative connotation.
I’m giving them more and more negative media space because it is evident that the brand has some of the most original perfumes I have seen.
The most popular Nishane perfumes are sadly blatant clones and expensive mid-tier compositions. While seeking inspiration is not inherently harmful, it becomes interesting when, like in the case of Ani, the initial spray of Hacivat undeniably resembles Aventus.
Furthermore, the ‘Shadow Play puppetry’ narrative appears detached from reality. The combination of pineapple, oakmoss, and grapefruit takes center stage in the composition, closely mirroring the traits of several Aventus clones that saturate the market.
If you have to go with a clone of Aventus, stick with Royal Vintage from M.Micallef. The same quality can be purchased for less than 100 USD for a full 100ml bottle.

6. Nishane Ani
A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “Having shown by the perfume lovers as the best vanilla scent and becoming an iconic scent, highly celebrated ANI is a romantic and calm perfume created under the inspiration of a famous Anatolian folk song called “Sarı Gelin” (in Turkish) or “Sari Gyalin” in Armenian. As the similarity of the name of the song in both languages suggests that both nations share a very similar culture as far as art, food or other aspects of life are concerned. ANI is the name of an ancient city that is now known as the Ani Ruins, which was included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
The only boundary is in the imagination of the people. This perfume is dedicated to ruin any border between people and to empower the wearer to build his/her own empire even in a situation when all he/she is left with nothing but the ruins.”
THE REASON WHY NISHANE ANI IS ONE OF THE MOST OVERRATED PERFUMES: How this is rated so highly, I have no idea. The praise comes from mostly younger generations who still haven’t sampled the best vanilla perfumes.
This is not strange because of the free bottle giveaways from Nishane to fragrance reviewers.
Self-proclaimed best vanilla fragrance by the brand is nothing more than a safe mid-tier niche oriental fragrance with Aventus and Cedrat Boise nuances.
Is there anything more to this than just overpowering synthetic vanilla? Well, yes, it is.
The composition is also heavily influenced by citrusy and spicy notes, which exhibit remarkable longevity and projection.
Sample before the purchase since it is nowhere near worth its retail price.

5. Roja Parfums Elysium Pour Homme Parfum Cologne
A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “The kind of fragrance which draws the world to its charm, Elysium exudes the perfect balance of easy-going brightness with sophisticated strength of character. This instantly-loveable creation opens with a prominent freshness that lasts all day, as a bright burst of Citrus and Herb notes are further lifted by an innovative Musk top note that adds weightlessness.
A juicy splash of Apple, Blackcurrant and Juniper Berry continue this vibrant personality, which dries down into a base of extreme depth and masculinity. An icon in the world of male perfumery – Pink Pepper – resonates throughout, whilst a dominant Cedarwood note transforms the entirety into a notably fresh, Woody Citrus scent, which has touches of sensuality deep in the base to lend a seductive masculinity.”
THE REASON WHY ROJA PARFUMS ELYSIUM POUR HOMME PARFUM COLOGNE IS ONE OF THE MOST OVERRATED PERFUMES: Roja Dove – the king of the perfume hype in the last ten years.
Roja Dove is the one who occasionally does original and pretty good compositions.
Still, the most popular scent from the brand remains those heavily inspired by other creations from the past.
As I said, there is nothing wrong with taking a fragrance DNA from the past and making it potentially better, but that Roja price. That Roja “exclusivity” is going to cost you a pretty penny.
The luxury status remains reserved for only four houses: Creed, L’Artisan Parfumeur, Serge Lutens, and Amouage.
I don’t care what these niche brands are trying to portray to you; it takes time to garner this status.
With Elysium, Roja Parfums promises you a luxurious and sophisticated experience, the only luxury being the money you’ll have to pay for it.
Despite the hefty price tag, Elysium lacks the originality and complexity expected from a niche fragrance.
The combination of citrus, vetiver, and aromatic woody notes feels derivative and uninspired, lacking the distinguishing character that sets exceptional perfumes apart.
Is it wearable? Absolutely. Are you going to receive multiple compliments when wearing Elysium? Of course. Is it worth the money? Heck no.

4. Profumum Roma Acqua di Sale
A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “The waves of the sea breaking on the shore give new shells of a thousand shapes and colors to the sand that glitters in the August morning sun. On the deserted beach carefreeness and freedom hover.”
THE REASON WHY PROFUMUM ROMA ACQUA DI SALE IS ONE OF THE MOST OVERRATED PERFUMES: It is often coined as the best aquatic fragrance of all time, but I couldn’t disagree more with those claims.
First, Acqua di Sale’s intense focus on salty and bitter herbal notes might not resonate with a broader audience.
Secondly, coming from a Mediterranean-based niche brand, I was surprised they failed to capture the essence of the bright and sunny Italian coast.
I rarely want to smell like seaweed, which is valid for most perfume enthusiasts.
While the initial blast of sea salt is undoubtedly unique, Acqua di Sale only sometimes evolves significantly over time. This can lead to monotony, especially for those seeking a dynamic olfactory experience.
Funnily enough, the most exciting part about this fragrance is that it works better during the winter when it takes a darker and different approach.
But, realistically, who wants to smell like this during the coldest months of the year? I indeed don’t.
Sel Marin from Heeley remains my favorite aquatic fragrance of all time, even though it sadly has a fifth of Acqua di Sale’s performance.

3. Nicolai Parfumeur New York Intense
A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “Patricia de Nicolaï conveys her fascination with ‘the city that never sleeps’ with her intoxicating oriental signature: after a start of citrus bursts, pepper and clove spice up the patchouli bordered with vanilla, incense and balm. It haunts the San-Antonio crime novels, whose author, Frédéric Dard, was one of the first aficionados.”
THE REASON WHY NICOLAI PARFUMEUR NEW YORK INTENSE IS ONE OF THE MOST OVERRATED PERFUMES: After all these years of sampling New York Intense, I still don’t get the fascination about this composition, which always makes the top lists of the best niche perfumes of all time.
Maybe, I’m still too young to understand it, or realistically, I know this is a woody aromatic fragrance from yesteryear with slightly higher quality ingredients than fragrances from that period.
If you have been in this hobby for more than five years, you have 100% smelled multiple fragrances similar to New York Intense and its older brother, New York.
Citrus opening and aromatic heart, which transitions into a mossy base. Of course, many more nuances here complete the whole package and give it additional dimension, but overall, I wouldn’t say this is a masterpiece like many claiming it to be.
On the other hand, the small 30ml bottle of New York Intense is affordable, and I recommend sampling it to see whether you like it.

2. Tauer Perfumes L’Air du Desert Marocain
A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “Powerful, sensual and pure. Lying on the bed, watching the moon rising over the sandy hills of the Saharan desert, he dreamt the fragrance of a Moroccan night.
A perfume that has become a classic. Enjoy it all year round: we love it especially in springtime.”
THE REASON WHY TAUER PERFUMES L’AIR DU DESERT MAROCAIN IS ONE OF THE MOST OVERRATED PERFUMES: Here comes the big boy of the fragrance community—the one you probably did not expect to end up here.
But let me ask you something. Has any of you ever finished a whole 50ml bottle of Marocain? From what I’ve heard from the other fragrance lovers, only some people did. But why?
The legendary status it has is a true mystery of this world. As an art piece, I can see all the love it has. But as a practical perfume you would wear more than once or twice yearly, it bombs.
This bone-dry herbal amber fragrance is entirely unwearable for me anywhere besides sitting at home, meaning I wasted my money on something I will likely never finish.
That’s why I sold my bottle of Marocain a long time ago and switched it with multiple times better Amber Sultan from Serge Lutens.
I’m entirely at peace with the fact that this has so many fans, but since I sold my bottle in 2021, I have only just now thought about Marocain again when it ended up on this overrated list.

1. Initio Parfums Prives Oud For Greatness
A NOTE FROM THE BRAND: “Oud for Greatness breathes out a force of nature, the wake of Greatness. The natural essence of Oud Wood has been perfected to this pitch, handled with majesty (and brutality) in this bold formula, scarcely highlighted by Patchouli and Musk.
Superbly textured, strikingly natural, Oud has been handled by the creator in a register that is astonishingly fresh (Lavender) and spicy (Nutmeg, Saffron).
An enchanting, thrilling perfume that makes all our dreams of greatness possible.”
THE REASON WHY INITIO PARFUMS PRIVES OUD FOR GREATNESS IS ONE OF THE MOST OVERRATED PERFUMES: Even if I had second thoughts about any previous entries about whether they should be here, I know that Oud for Greatness deserves the first spot without any competition.
Whoever was the unnamed perfumer(ironic, isn’t it?) behind this creation and thought about mixing synthetic oud(yeah, this does not smell natural, no matter what Initio claims) with BR540 was a brave person.
I’m also shocked since this sells hotcakes for 340 USD for 90ml. To put the icing on the cake, over 50% of online reviews for OFG are quite possibly sponsored and don’t speak the whole truth.
This is not just my opinion, but a reference from other perfume lovers. A compliment-getter but an unpleasant and potent mix of something I would never want to wear.
Probably the first and the last time I’ll talk about Oud for Greatness.

Looking back to the list of perfumes that made my top 10 most overrated fragrances, I can understand why most of these could easily make up some of the other’s favorite scents of all time.
