Top 10 best Dior perfumes: The list

Best Dior Perfumes - Dior Store

Before we start with the list, here are a couple of rules I set for myself on how this list was meant to be made.

Firstly, there are no discontinued(with one exception) Dior fragrances here since they would dominate the actual list.

This includes original Dior Homme and Intense, Fahrenheit Absolute, Fahrenheit 32, Eau Sauvage Parfum 2012, Midnight Poison, and some other releases as well.

Also, some popular Dior releases are not here because of either me not spending enough time to sample them such as Dior Sauvage Elixir, or haven’t had an opportunity to try them out yet such as Bois d’Argent.

Secondly, some scents from the brand are notoriously hard to find such as Dior Homme Parfum was also left from the article as they are almost equally hard to find as are the discontinued releases.

Thirdly, only one perfume from the La Collection Privee is here due to the higher price point, and Dior is best known are a designer brand, rather than a niche one.

And lastly, this list is not made in the descending way of the number 10 being worse than number one and vice versa. Each of these fragrances is excellent and worth sampling.

Now that we know why some of my personal favorite discontinued Dior’s aren’t here, let’s check out the scents that made the top 10.

10. Dior J’adore Eau de Parfum

A note from the brand: “An iconic fragrance, J’adore Eau de Parfum is the grand feminine floral by the House of Dior.

Finely crafted and tuned to the last detail like a custom-made flower, J’adore brings in the most beautiful flowers from around the world in its composition. The floral and fruity notes of the Ylang-Ylang and Turkish Damascus Rose essences, blend with the rare duo of Jasmine Grandiflorum from Grasse and Indian Jasmine Sambac that are full of fruity and voluptuous sensuality.”

Why is J’adore Eau de Parfum one of the best Dior perfumes: A true classic from the brand that has been on the market for over two decades now.

Classy, elegant, and the perfect fragrance for a sophisticated woman. What’s even better, it is a crowd-pleaser perfume with an addictive combination of sweet, fruity, and floral notes dominating the composition.

It’s a jasmine-heavy perfume that evokes summer in some older South European cities such as Seville or Athens. A chic, timeless, and easy-to-wear masterpiece from Maison Dior.

9. Dior Miss Dior Eau de Parfum 2017

A note from the brand: “In 1947, Miss Dior was born out of a wild impetus where the pressing desire to re-enchant women’s lives and open up their eyes to the sparkling colors of love again was felt. Following a bleak period, this scent was synonymous with renewed happiness, poetry, and harmony for Christian Dior at that time. Miss Dior intrigues, excites and invites us to marvel at love and all the beauty in the world.

Why is Miss Dior Eau de Parfum 2017 one of the best Dior perfumes: Miss Dior has gone through so many different iterations that it’s becoming hard to keep track, but of all the recent releases, I believe that the 2017 version still holds up the best.

A sophisticated combination of rose and patchouli with added depth from citruses. Not too heavy and not overly sweet, Miss Dior is a vibrant and modern composition with a classy sillage.

If you are someone who enjoys fresh and flowery perfumes, this might be the perfect scent for spring and fall days. It has been officially discontinued, but it is still available regularly.

8. Dior Dolce Vita

A note from the brand: “Dolce Vita, the fragrance of happiness recalls the carefree, heart-lifting nostalgia of driving a convertible along the Italian Riviera. A dazzlingly feminine and joyful fruity/floral fragrance with spicy, sensual undertones of cedar, it incarnates the spirit of Dior in all its sumptuousness.”

Why is Dolce Vita one of the best Dior perfumes: Dolce Vita translates from Italian to “sweet life,” giving you a hint about what this fragrance is all about.

A classic and luminous release, it brought so much happiness to millions who wore it in the ’90s and who still proudly wear it today.

With its sparkling and soft aroma, ranging from fruity notes of apricot and peach to oriental opulent notes of cinnamon and vanilla, Dolce Vita is the perfect fragrance for those times in life when we have no worries, and we need something to add the final touch of perfection.

It evokes road trips in different, long-gone times and places during the colder months of the year.

7. Dior Hypnotic Poison

A note from the brand: “Hypnotic Poison isn’t a fragrance you wear, it’s a fragrance that wears you. Hypnotic Poison Eau de Toilette is a magnetic scent, a heady oriental fragrance with carnal Vanilla notes that meld with an Almond and Jasmine accord. It’s a terribly sensual fragrance.”

Why is Hypnotic Poison one of the best Dior perfumes: Dior’s masterpiece is still one of the most popular women’s choices around the world and for good reason.

It’s sweet, warm, and has a timeless scent profile. The notes are deep, sensual, and captivating with powdery vanilla and almond acting as the main player.

Seductive and sexy fragrance I recommend wearing during the coldest time of the year for those mysterious vibes we want to project sometimes.

6. Dior Addict

A note from the brand: “Dior Addict Eau de Parfum unleashes fresh and captivating top notes that blend Mandarin Leaf with Tunisian Orange Blossom.

Intense and vibrant, it reveals a powerful heart of Jasmine Sambac Absolute that blossoms with soft femininity and sensuality. The base unfurls in the deep and exquisite warmth of Bourbon Vanilla.

A soft and seductive trail tinged with light.”

Why is Addict one of the best Dior perfumes: While I typically try to avoid playing favorites, I must admit that Addict is my top pick among all women’s Dior fragrances.

There’s just something about this scent that speaks to me, and I believe it would make an ideal signature fragrance for any classy woman.

Based on a classic oriental composition, Addict also incorporates fruity notes of blackberry and is anchored by the woody base of sandalwood, resulting in a mysterious and alluring oriental fragrance.

With its sweet and spicy aroma and enticing sillage, Addict is a must-have addition to any fragrance collection.

5. Dior Oud Ispahan

A note from the brand: “Oud Ispahan elegantly embraces a warm identity: it is the olfactory translation of a warm palace, where shimmering hues meld with intoxicating scents to become one.

Sophisticated charm and a traveler’s soul influence the powerful character and accents of Oud Ispahan. It is an uncompromising fragrance that highlights its woody force with the spicy, decisive character of Damascus Rose.”

Why is Oud Ispahan one of the best Dior perfumes: The only Dior fragrance on this list from the La Collection Privee, and the only one which is officially marketed as a unisex perfume.

The reason why Oud Ispahan made the list instead of some other more popular releases is that it can be found more easily in stores and is often available at a lower price.

This is because the familiar oud/rose composition is one that many of us have seen in numerous other releases, but this one has a few tricks up its sleeve that make it stand out from the rest.

Besides the classic rose and oud formula, Oud Ispahan’s oud is rich but not animalic, and the labdanum creates a smooth and warm amber/leather dry down that is to die for. If you’re an oud lover, this one is definitely worth trying.

4. Dior Sauvage Eau de Parfum

A note from the brand: “Sauvage Eau de Parfum teams the freshness of a juicy, spicy Calabrian Bergamot note with the sensuality of a mysterious and enveloping Papua New Guinean Vanilla absolute accord. The fragrance unfurls a powerful and noble trail.

To create Sauvage Eau de Parfum, François Demachy, Dior Perfumer-Creator, drew inspiration from the desert at the magical twilight hour: mixed with the coolness of the night, the burning desert air exudes profound scents.”

Why is Sauvage Eau de Parfum one of the best Dior perfumes: Sauvage might not be the most creative perfume from Dior, nor the best from the bunch, but it is certainly the most popular and versatile fragrance from this house.

Personally, I reserve those accolades for Dior Homme Intense and Fahrenheit. Sauvage has everything I ever wanted from a quality fragrance I can wear throughout the year to smell professional and alluring while not potentially offending anyone with my scent.

A fresh, musky, and spicy fragrance that most will love, it is also the best “blue” type of perfume of all time. With Sauvage, you cannot go wrong.

3. Dior Eau Sauvage

A note from the brand: “A revolutionary fragrance before, an iconic fragrance today. Absolutely modern. A token of good taste and refined masculinity, Eau Sauvage Eau de Toilette is more than just a fragrance. It is synonymous with absolute elegance, an enduring “Dior spirit” infused with modernity.

Its floral citrus signature is both refined and powerful, sophisticated and fresh. The subtle balance of San Carlo bergamot, harvested exclusively for Eau Sauvage, the vibrant touch of hedione with a unique, velvety, floral quality and a distinctive chypre trail.”

Why is Eau Sauvage one of the best Dior perfumes: Refined, worldly, and a great fragrance for spring and summer, Eau Sauvage has barbershop DNA running through its composition.

Even after all these years, it is still considered by many to be the greatest men’s fragrance from Dior, regardless of age.

The fragrance has everything someone with good taste would want from a classic scent, from the natural-smelling citrusy opening to its spicy/floral heart. Don’t be afraid of the mossy dry down; a classic is a classic, and Eau Sauvage’s scent trail is one of the best.

When I think about Eau Sauvage, I picture Sean Connery, a true gentleman.

2. Dior Homme Intense

A note from the brand: “Dior Homme is worn the way you wear an elegantly sharp, modern suit. Dior Homme Intense Eau de Parfum reveals the extreme grandeur and sophistication of a generous and powerful Eau de Parfum. The olfactory intensity of Iris is enhanced by a sensual Ambery facet and precious wood base. A scented, sensual script whose trail calls to you.

Dior Homme Intense is a ‘dry’ and persistent oriental. Its full, round notes are wrapped in wood to give the composition a drier character. It has a clear, unrestrained manliness about it.”

Why is Dior Homme Intense one of the best Dior perfumes: I cannot stress enough how groundbreaking the release of Dior Homme Intense was back in 2007 (original formulation).

This fragrance is the reference for men’s iris/makeup perfumes that opens up with the aromas of powder, lipstick, makeup, aromatic herbs, and bitter citruses lurking in the background.

If you like trendy oriental perfumes full of amber, vanilla, and tonka beans, you are in luck. As DHI dries down, what is left is warm and musky vanilla with hints of chocolate, making it great.

Many have tried to copy this formula with more or less success, but there is only one Dior Homme Intense. It is a true gem in the perfume world.

1. Dior Fahrenheit

A note from the brand: “A unique and contrasting signature, with a powerful enchanting trail. Fresh Sicilian Mandarin notes, and the surprising combination of masculine Wood and Leather with an unprecedented Violet accord.

Creativity, distinction, and character: the Fahrenheit signature is unique—manly yet subtle—for men with a love of freedom.”

Why is Fahrenheit one of the best Dior perfumes: As is the case with Addict being my favorite women’s fragrance from Dior, so is Fahrenheit from the men’s selection.

A violet leaf masterpiece, a distinct and bold release that still smells modern, just as it did back in the 80s. Of everything on this list, I believe that only Fahrenheit would still smell fresh even if it were released 20 years in the future from now.

Better known as the “gasoline” fragrance, it stands out from the crowd, and in my opinion, it’s the best black leather fragrance of all time.

Surprisingly versatile for such a unique composition, I could imagine Nicholas Cage wearing it at the start of his film career. There is nothing else like Fahrenheit.

Dior Brand and Perfume History

The house of Dior was founded by the late Christian Dior more than 70 years ago in Paris, France. In February 1947, Christian Dior launched his first fashion collection for Spring–Summer 1947 named the “New Look“.

At the end of the 1940s, this “New Look” collection was a pioneering period for women, for which Christian Dior is credited with reviving France’s post-World War 2 fashion industry.

As the collection grew ever so popular so has Christian Dior gained more and more prominent clients from Hollywood and high-profile European clientele.

Until Christian Dior’s death in 1957, the company expanded to the United States, Australia, Canada, and Central America as one of the leaders in female high fashion.

Christian Dior Parfums branch was established in 1947 or 1948, and the first perfume they ever released was the popular Miss Dior.

As with fashion, Dior revolutionized the perfumery industry with this perfume, named after his sister. On the male side of perfumes, Eau Sauvage, Fahrenheit, Dior Homme, and Sauvage have been the major players and trend shifters, and are all still available on the market.

Today, Dior is owned by LVMH and controlled by French businessman Bernard Arnault(also a chairman of LVMH). Their wide variety of products is sold throughout retail stores worldwide, as well as through Dior online store.

Dior perfume collection

Dior offers several fragrance lines, each with its own unique characteristics and target audience. These include designer women’s and men’s collections along with the niche line Le Collection Privee.

No matter if you are looking for a more affordable designer Dior fragrance or something from the Privee line, rest assured that each of the brand’s products uses high-quality ingredients, carefully selected and combined to create something new and luxurious.

Some of the natural ingredients you will find in each Dior fragrance are May rose from Grasse, Tuscan iris, Calabrian bergamot, and Arabian jasmine just to name a few.

One area where Dior currently focuses is sustainability. In early 2022, Dior established a responsible formulation charter that lays out houses requirements and ambitions concerning the formulas. This charter is explicit on the definition of Clean Beauty.

From the lady’s designer collection, Dior offers a variety of fragrances from J’adore, Miss Dior, Joy, Poison, Addict, Dunce, and Dolce Vita lines.

As for the gentlemen, Sauvage, Dior Homme, Fahrenheit, Eau Sauvage, Higer, and Dune lines are available.

What’s even better, each Dior fragrance comes in a variety of accompanying products such as aftershave, deodorant sprays, body wash, and many more.

Last but not least, everyone interested in niche perfumery can choose upper-level fragrances such as Ambre Nuit, Feve Delicieuse, or Tobacolor at a higher price point.

How to buy Dior perfumes

Over more than 70 years as a fashion and perfume house, Dior has released more than 250 different perfumes. Some of them are original lines while others are flankers to those perfumes.

Choosing the best Dior fragrances for yourself is easier than numbers might suggest. Here are my tips on how to narrow down the list:

  1. Know your perfume preferences and how much you wish to spend
  2. Consider the occasion and season since perfumes are suited for different weather conditions and needs
  3. Sample perfumes before committing to full bottles. You can do this by visiting Dior boutiques or a fragrance store that offers testers. There is nothing less appealing than blindly buying a fragrance and realizing that it was a waste of money
  4. Read reviews – reading perfume reviews from other perfume lovers can help you narrow down your wish list and point you in the right direction
  5. Spending around 100$ – start with Dior Homme 2020 or Dior Sauvage Eau de Parfum
  6. Spending more than 150$ – start with Dior Sauvage Elixir or Vanilla Diorama

PRO TIP: Do not buy Dior fragrances from unreliable places or stores that offer a massive discount that seems too good to be true. Dior is one of those popular fragrance houses that get counterfeited a lot.

By considering these factors, you can choose a perfume that suits your style and preferences, and make a great choice.

How to wear perfumes

At the first glance, perfume may seem like scented alcohol water you spray onto yourself and that’s it. Still, it takes a little finesse to learn how to wear perfume correctly.

If you have ever wondered why your perfume may only last about an hour or two, the reason may be that you are not wearing your perfume the best way. Here are my favorite tips&tricks on how to wear your favorite fragrances:

One of the most important things to do when you find your favorite perfume is to choose the right perfume concentrations and learn more about fragrance strengths.

These two terms refer to raw material oil concentration. By knowing that, these concentrations vary from perfume to perfume and affect sillage and projection, along with some other subtle things.

All fragrant products fall into some of these main categories:

  • Eau Fraiche 1-3%
  • After Shave/Mist/Splash 1-3%
  • Eau de Cologne 2-4%
  • Eau de Toilette 5-15%
  • Eau de Parfum 15-20%
  • Pure Parfum/Extrait de Parfum 20-40%

Thus, you’ll be pleased to know that most of your perfumes come either in Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum concentrations.

Another important point you should consider before buying a perfume is choosing the right perfume for particular occasions and seasons.

This will greatly depend on your lifestyle, workplace, and in which part of the world you live in. Daytime fragrance usually is lighter, citrusy, effervescent, and lasts less. We usually associate these types of scents with Spring and Summer.

On the other hand, nighttime fragrances are stronger and denser with “heavier” notes. Heavier fragrances and usually associated with the Fall and Winter seasons.

The ideal way of wearing the perfume is by applying it directly to the skin. Perfume products are made to best interact with our skin and our body heat.

That’s why I don’t recommend testing fragrances on test strips that don’t show the real picture. The warmest parts of your body will produce the best results and here are six recommended places to spray your perfume:

  1. Spray on top of your ears
  2. Spray behind the ears
  3. Spray on the neck and around the neck area
  4. Spray down your back
  5. Spray down your chest
  6. Spray inside your elbows

You have found your favorite perfume, and you are enjoying it to the fullest. Spraying liberally surrounds you with the most beautiful scented cloud. You are happy.

But one day, you notice that the scent bubble has shrunk so much that you barely smell your perfume and now you wonder has your perfume has gone bad or what could be the issue.

If this has happened to you, don’t worry you are alone. Many people overspray their perfume, and block their scent receptors. The solution is to not spray more than 2 to 4 sprays maximum.

As we know, oily skin holds onto fragrance better than dry skin. That’s why it is a good idea to rub unscented lotion onto your pulse point and the rest of the body before applying perfume.

A small amount is enough and preferably, you should apply oily moisturizer after a shower. This takes us to other great alternatives just below.

Different Fragrance Families

Fragrance families are a classification system used by the perfume industry to place different scents into olfactive groups.

These families have evolved through centuries with ever-going technology discoveries the fragrance wheel has been changed multiple times that help you narrow down your favorite perfume choice and distinguish scents.

Simply explained, notes are perfume indigents, and accords are “fantasy” notes made from several other notes to get one distinct accord(note) that couldn’t be recreated otherwise.

Such accords are leather, amber, and marine notes, while notes can be bergamot, rose, and vanilla. But, while it may sound as simple as this, there are some other things to consider as well.

Smelly alcohol-water known as perfumes are made from multiple notes and accords which are made from a mixture of natural and aroma-chemical indigents to form a general scent profile.

These notes and accords are separated into three different classes known as the perfume pyramid:

  • Top Notes
  • Middle Notes
  • Base Notes

Each of the separate pyramid stages is carefully created by perfumes to evaporate accordingly.

For example, top notes such as citruses evaporate faster than for instance, Sandalwood and Agarwood found in the middle or base stage of the perfume.

In modern perfumery, accords are a vital part of creating a harmonious blend of two or more notes into a distinctive smell.

While this process is more complex than it may sound, it’s always good to know how is your perfume composed and when can you expect more natural indigents rather than synthetics.

So, to conclude the fragrance term referred to as “notes” and “accords” are often used as marketing to explain approximately what consumers may expect when smelling a particular perfume.

These are the four different fragrance families:

Floral scents can be either made from single flower notes(soliflore) or many flowers(bouquets). Nature has provided perfumers with a variety of ingredients, thanks to many different flowers all around the world.

Both classic and as old as the citrus(Fresh) family, it leans more to the feminine side, but recently, many floral dominating scents such as Black Orchid have proven that even men can wear floral family scents and smell great.

Oriental fragrance family is equally popular among men and women. Orientals have been dominating on fragrance market in the 21st century and they are not going to stop any time soon.

Rich spices such as vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, and balmy resins such as benzoin, myrrh, incense, and amber are just some of the prominent notes found in this broad family.

It is not uncommon for oriental perfumes to feature gourmand properties(“edible” notes). Thus, this fragrance family is often sweet, dense, sensual, powdery, and inspired by eastern cultures.

The woody family leans more toward men and is usually composed of warm, and rich compositions. If you are a fan of forest, sawdust, earthy, and dry type of smells, this family might be just for you.

Woody perfumes are split into three main categories but have many more variations since it is a fragrance family that tends to overlap with others the most with the combination of fresh and resinous notes.

Woody perfumes also tend to be long-lasting, blended for various seasons, and due to their warm heart, more and more unisex.

Fresh family is the most crowd-pleasing of them all, and the only one that equally leans both on the masculine and feminine side. Perfumes have never been more affordable and accessible than they are now, and fresh scents are dominating the market since the early 90s.

Of all the fragrance families we have covered, the fresh family spans the most varieties of sub-categories of all the different fresh combinations that seem to work like bread and butter with others.

They are easy to wear, often fresh and airy uncomplicated scents. Fresh perfumes are also the only fragrance family group that’s wearable in any season and on most occasions.

Fresh scents tend to have a mix of sparkly fruits, aromatic herbs, lighter woods, and musk in their composition.
