Top 100 Perfumes Of All Time - tom ford ombre leather

Perfume is a unique and personal accessory that can trigger lasting memories, and generate different moods. In this article, we’ll look at my personal top 100 perfumes of all time.

From classic and timeless scents to modern and daring fragrances, each perfume on this list has a unique personal story and captures a memory from my life.

Of everything I have written on Scent Grail, this article is undoubtedly one of the most fun and challenging to create. Why?

The answer is quite simple. With so many perfumes available and having either owned or sampled numerous scents, it can be challenging to narrow it down to just 100.

I’m aware that some fragrances may have been left out because I may have forgotten about them over time. But that’s life.

My top 100 perfumes of all time

Top 100 Perfumes Of All Time - bleu de chanel

Before we begin with the actual list, let me explain how it was created. As a fragrance enthusiast approaching my 20th year of exploration, I have sampled nearly everything one can find in perfume retail shops.

From Dior to Molinard, from cheap designers to much more expensive and obscure niche releases, if a fragrance piqued my interest, I’ve at least tried it.

Now, for the biggest question: how did I compose this list? Firstly, I opened an Excel spreadsheet and listed every single fragrance I have ever owned or currently own (this only counts for full bottles).

Then, I reviewed lists from other fragrance websites to jog my memory of fragrances I have sampled but never owned. Of course, this doesn’t mean everything is included on the list. I also do blind buy mistakes.

The painstaking task of ranking 100 scents began to lose its significance at some point, as many of the fragrances seemed to be of similar quality. Thus, I decided to group the first 60 scents as generally similar, while the top 40 are ranked much more strictly.

Regardless, I am certain that even the number 100 could be a better choice for someone than anything in the top 10, as fragrance is a personal choice.

Lastly, each fragrance in the tenth position(100,90,80…) has a more detailed description for easy reference throughout the article. Let’s begin!

100. Davidoff Cool Water

A note from the brand: “Discover the legendary freshness from the ocean. The scent unfolds with aromatic notes of mint and lavender, blended with the sensuality of amber. A unique composition, crafted with more than 18 natural ingredients, that delivers an immediate freshness. Cool Water, your ultimate blend of freshness, sexiness and power.”

Why is Davidoff Cool Water one of my top 100 perfumes of all time: The classic. The myth. Davidoff Cool Water is the one and only. A fragrance that continues to sell like hotcakes due to its widely appealing aromatic and fresh scent DNA that will never go out of style.

The fragrance was created by the same perfumer who created Creed’s Green Irish Tweed, and the resemblance is uncanny.

While the ingredients aren’t on the same level as in GIT, Cool Water is near enough to make you reconsider purchasing the original.

Sharp, clean, fresh, and masculine. A fragrance for a man who knows how to be a gentleman.

A note from the brand: “Blue Jeans is a fragrance one always goes back to. A classic masculine fragrance with woodsy, citrusy notes with a spicy heart and a warm drydown.”

Why is Versace Blue Jeans one of my top 100 perfumes of all time: Blue Jeans takes me back to the early days of my fragrance collection. There’s something pure and calming about this scent that still prompts me to occasionally spray myself with it when I’m in perfume shops.

This is a great starter fragrance that smells fresh and elegant, with three distinct phases: a citrus opening, an aromatic heart, and a warm and woody base. Versace’s Blue Jeans is suitable for anyone, with a great price point and decent longevity.

It’s a fragrance suitable for both genders and a scent everyone should check out when starting this wonderful hobby.

Why is Versace Dreamer one of my top 100 perfumes of all time: Dreamer by Versace was one of my first great perfume crushes, which I wore everywhere I went for a few winters when I was still new to this hobby.

An addictive blend of aromatic and powdered lavender, smoky tobacco, and a sweet and nutty tonka bean base.

Dreamer is one of the few perfumes that will grow on you even if your first impressions aren’t excellent. A good release and the final Versace release under the artistic direction of the late Gianni Versace.

A note from the brand: “A parfum of doubles, of layers, of male and female with a unique result: L’Homme Prada, a mix of classic ingredients mixed in a contemporary accent. Neroli, geranium and Patchuli are mixed with Amber and Iris, a sensual fragrance with a sophisticated allure.

Why is Prada L’Homme one of my top 100 perfumes of all time: If I had to sum up L’homme in a single sentence, it would be this: L’homme is a sophisticated, wearable fragrance that everyone seems to like.

I was hesitant about this one, thinking it couldn’t possibly smell better than Amber from the same house, but it does. And they’re distinct enough that you could easily own both.

L’homme is a lovely, fresh, clean, and powdery scent that exudes suavity, and everyone should own it. The entire composition is so well-balanced that it works for both men and women.

60. Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male

A note from the brand: “Le Male, as virile as it is sexy, pays tribute to the mythical figure that has forever inspired Jean Paul Gaultier: the sailor. This men’s perfume has an unconventional vision of masculinity. Lavender, referencing the familiar and reassuring smell of shaving soap, is enhanced with the sensuality of vanilla.”

Why is Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male one of my top 100 perfumes of all time: I have to share one secret with you. From all the flankers of this mega-popular fragrance, I still prefer the original over everything else, and the only other fragrance from the line that comes close to it is the discontinued Fleur du Mâle.

A classic that is popular for a reason, and the first fragrance created by the master perfumer Francis Kurkdjian.

You really can’t go wrong with Le Male no matter if you are just beginning this hobby, or someone who owns 1000 other scents in your collection.

A fresh oriental that smells warm, cozy, and inviting. It may have lost its original lasting power and depth, but make no mistake thinking this is just another generic fragrance. A masterpiece.

50. Hermès Un Jardin Sur Le Nil

A note from the brand: “Jardin sur le Nil eau de toilette evokes an olfactory journey to the garden islands in Aswan, Egypt. In this composition, perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena tells of this river synonymous with life and generosity. Designed by Fred Rawyler, the bottle is inspired by the lines of horse-drawn carriage lanterns. Its glass is in a delicate green gradient, evoking the banks of the Nile. The box is illustrated with a lotus flower by artist Veronique de Mareuil.”

Why is Hermès Un Jardin Sur Le Nil one of my top 100 perfumes of all time: Un Jardin Sur Le Nil is an exceptional fragrance that embodies an artistic masterpiece in a bottle, and it’s considered as one of the top citrus/green fragrances ever created.

I have many times said before but, at first, I was hesitant about the floral-green-citrus fusion, as it appeared to be more suitable for women than men based on its notes.

However, Un Jardin Sur Le Nil is a remarkable scent that develops over time, providing a unique experience rather than just a fragrance. Its prominent green and citrusy notes make it an unparalleled and transparent masterpiece that stands out in the market.

This timeless fragrance is genuinely unisex and uplifting, and it transports you to a luxurious garden. It’s an excellent choice for anyone seeking an exceptional and unforgettable scent.

42. Guerlain Vetiver

40. Dior Homme 2020

A note from the brand: “Dior Homme redefines a new, masculine sensuality with its composition of smooth and raw wood. In the heart notes of tender wood lies the virility of Atlas Cedar embracing the enveloping warmth of Haitian Vetiver tinged with spices. The wood is chiseled in-house at Dior.”

Why is Dior Homme 2020 one of my top 100 perfumes of all time: I love the original ‘iris’ line of Dior Homme, which is probably one of the best fragrance lines of all time, but I also appreciate the new direction that Dior has taken with the Homme line.

Dior Homme 2020 is a fresh and woody fragrance with hints of spice that is perfect for modern times. It has an expensive aroma and stands out from the sea of sweet and blue fragrances that flood the market. I believe that this fragrance will become a classic in about five years, and it is a scent that you can wear every day and still smell great.

Don’t let any negative feedback deter you from trying it out. Dior Homme 2020 is something that everyone should have in their collection.

30. Guerlain Shalimar Eau de Parfum

A note from the brand: “Inspired by the passionate love story between an emperor and an Indian princess, Shalimar, which means “temple of love” in Sanskrit, symbolises the promise of eternal love forevermore. It is a fragrance of desire. With its smouldering and slightly impertinent character, the star oriental fragrance in perfumery embodies skin-caressing sensuality with a hint of the forbidden. “Wearing Shalimar means letting your senses take over,” Jacques Guerlain would say.”

Why is Guerlain Shalimar one of my top 100 perfumes of all time: The beautiful and classic Shalimar is a timeless creation that, believe it or not, is almost 100 years old, and it still smells better than most fragrances on the market.

Many generations of women and men have loved Shalimar and still wear it. It is not an old-fashioned fragrance, yet a classic, and it is in a league of its own.

This Guerlain fragrance provides an alluring aroma of citruses, incense, vanilla, and leather that is suitable for colder seasons of the year.

If you love complex scents that won’t break the bank, Shalimar is the right fragrance for you, no matter if you are a woman or a man. It’s a must-have.

20. Tom Ford Black Orchid

A note from the brand: A luxurious and sensual fragrance of rich, dark accords and an alluring potion of black orchids, and spice, Tom Ford’s Black Orchid is both modern and timeless. Bottled in fluted, black-glass, black orchid makes an unforgettable statement of iconic style and worldly glamour.

Why is Black Orchid one of my top 100 perfumes of all time: Black Orchid is a unique fragrance that stands out from all others and is easily recognizable among fragrance enthusiasts.

It leaves a lasting impression, whether positive or negative. Personally, I consider it to be the best women’s fragrance of all time, and possibly one of the top five fragrances overall.

It’s suited for a sophisticated and confident woman who takes charge of her life and isn’t afraid to make difficult decisions.

The combination of chocolate, truffles, patchouli, and orchid creates a delightful blend that differs from the typical designer perfume.

This high-performance fragrance is not for everyone, and that’s perfectly fine. It’s a strong, assertive scent that exudes power and should be explored and appreciated. Only for those who indulge in life’s pleasures.

10. Dior Sauvage Eau de Parfum

A note from the brand: “Sauvage Eau de Parfum teams the freshness of a juicy, spicy Calabrian Bergamot note with the sensuality of a mysterious and enveloping Papua New Guinean Vanilla absolute accord. The fragrance unfurls a powerful and noble trail.

To create Sauvage Eau de Parfum, François Demachy, Dior Perfumer-Creator, drew inspiration from the desert at the magical twilight hour: mixed with the coolness of the night, the burning desert air exudes profound scents.”

Why is Dior Sauvage Eau de Parfum one of my top 100 perfumes of all time: While Sauvage may not be the most innovative scent from Dior or their best offering, it is undoubtedly their most popular and adaptable fragrance.

However, in my opinion, I would reserve such high praise for Dior Homme Intense and Fahrenheit. Sauvage, on the other hand, provides everything I seek in a quality fragrance that I can wear throughout the year to exude a professional and enticing scent while also avoiding any possibility of offending anyone.

It’s a fresh, musky, and spicy aroma that most people will appreciate, and it is arguably the best “blue” perfume of all time. With Sauvage, you can’t go wrong.

1. Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur

A note from the brand: “Savage sex appeal. Musc Ravageur enhances the magnetic aspect of musk with amber, vanilla, patchouli and sandalwood, at the total exclusion of floral notes.

Having caused a scandal when the perfume first appeared in 2000, Musc Ravageur is now celebrated in all its sensuousness as the Sistine Chapel of the Soft Amber tradition. An unapologetically sexy perfume.”

Why is Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur one of my top 100 perfumes of all time: There can only be one at the number one spot, and that honor goes to the only and only Musc Ravageur.

By now, I have smelled probably thousands of different perfumes, and no other scent evoked such a strong and joyful experience as this one.

Musc Ravageur suits me perfectly and seems tailor-made for me. Despite being almost 25 years old by 2025, it doesn’t feel old-fashioned at all. Some fragrances are just timeless and will never go out of style.

It has a delectable blend of cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, and musk, with a touch of fresh citrus and lavender to complement them. It reminds me of a tasty Christmas cookie and is ideal for wearing from the winter holidays to early spring. Remarkable and one of the few fragrances I would save if my house was burning down.

  1. Great article! Always interesting to see what makes the cut for someone’s “top” list, especially for top 100.
We have 2 of the same for top 10, TF Oud Wood and Tobacco Vanille.
A couple other of my top 10, didn’t even make your top 100:
    – Chanel Egoiste (not the platinum, the OG)
    – Chanel Pour Monsieur (my signature scent)
    – Maison Francis Kurkdjian l’Homme À la Rose
    – Byredo Blanche

    1. Hi Adam,

I have to say that narrowing everything down to just 100 took me some time and delayed the release of the article for a couple of days. Now that I’m seeing Egoiste, I knew that something would be overlooked. Regarding Pour Monsieur, it is a well-blended fragrance, but it’s not something I would wear a lot. I haven’t tried that MFK fragrance, but seeing “Rose” in its name, it probably won’t be my cup of tea, and the same goes for Byredo, unfortunately.

Thanks for your support, and I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed the article which will be revised from time to time as months and years go by.

      Cheers! 🙂

  2. Great list Marin, I use this list as a reference to which perfume to buy next.
However, I was shock Jazz Club Maison Martin Margiela is not on the list.

    1. Hi Abody, I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed the list. Regarding Jazz Club, unfortunately, I didn’t find it enjoyable enough to include it in the selection. However, it is still a fragrance that I believe is worth checking out. Best, Marin

  3. Great article Marin. I enjoyed reading it and ordered a few fragrances off the list. However, I am surprised that you didn’t include Azzaro Chrome or Elysium Roja Dove on the list. Do you think they are not good enough? Thanks again!

    1. Hi Syed. While Chrome is decent, it doesn’t evoke any strong emotions in me. Regarding Elysium, I’ve actually reviewed it recently, and my feelings are a bit mixed. It’s good, but I wouldn’t call it something truly exceptional, unfortunately. Nonetheless, I’m pleased to hear that you’ve enjoyed the article. Keep smelling great! Marin
